Twenty-five years ago, 62 students became the first high school graduates of Manresa School. These pioneers continued their journey in life, now outside the walls of their Alma Mater. Strengthened by their Manresan Education and Christian Values, they set out to the four corners of the world.
Fast forward to February 18, 2006, seven returned to Manresa to celebrate their Silver Anniversary. Together with Jovits Berenguel, Jun Correa, Jojo Francisco, Pat Layog, Eman Malinao, Gay Rivera-Moreno and Lilian Vales-Arevalo, representatives of the 24 batches that followed made up the 100 plus guest list of the Grand Alumni Homecoming.
Also present were some notable Sisters from the ‘70s and ‘80s. Who can ever forget Sister Lina, Sister Angie, Sister Lee, Sister Isabel and Sister Amelia (the MCs even mentioned that if today’s students have their Sister Pacita, students of the ‘70s and early ‘80s had Sister Amelia). They came over from the Manresa Retreat House with Provincial Supervisor Sister Florencia. Tenured teachers included Ms. Josie Reyes, Ms. Belen Raymundo, Ms. Leila Dizon, Ms. Precy Guingab, Ms. Procy Manicad, Ms. Nilda Panopio, Ms. Dulce Atienza, Mr. Banaag Marcos, Ms. Josie Midel, Ms. Beth Austria, Ms. Aida Gomez(currently the Asst. Principal) and the ever popular Ms. Pat Cruz. Of course the current administration was present : Directress/Principal Sr. Nelida, Treasurer Sr. Beck, Sr. Alma May, Sr. Teody, Sr. Teresa H., Sr. Teresa M., Sister Leoly and MSAA Adviser Sr. Pacita.
After the registration and the usual ‘HIs and HELLOs’ associated with gatherings such as this, everyone proceeded to the El Rosarillo Chapel for the Thanksgiving Mass. Celebrated by Fr. Rene T. Lagaya, SDB, he focused his homily on wether or not the Alumni is ‘Paralysed.’ The heavenly voices of Korus filled the chapel from the opening hymn to the recessional.
Souls fed, the throng started to proceed to the MS Gym for Dinner. Along the Main Building Hallway, the Frames of Batches 1989-1995 were unveiled. After the unveiling, an Alumni from a recent batch remarked: ‘The first floor is already full with the frames of 1981-1995, does that mean, I’ll have to go to the 2nd floor to see my picture?’
Upon reaching the gym (and saying grace before meals), the waiters at the buffet table started to serve two long queues.
With the entrance of colors (by the ACP Officers, all of whom will be members of the MSAA, as the 26th batch of HS graduates), the program started. Emceed by Gem Arceo-Galang (’83) and Maan Teves (’94), they began by acknowledging the guests. Sister Nelida delivered her Welcome Remarks.
The rather lengthy Election of Officers followed and when the smoked cleared, a new set of Officers was announced. Leading MSAA in 2006-2008 is Darlene Tan (’95). VPs are Eman Malinao (’81) and Don Antonio (’87). After a 2 year ‘rest’ Maan Teves (’94) will again be the Secretary, Patrick Santos (’89) will continue to serve as Treasurer for another 2 years. Rounding the group is Gem Galang (’83) as Auditor.
A Prize was given to Batch ’89 for having the most number of attendees (28 in all). But before they got their prize, they first had to sing the Himno dela Madre Fundadora ('Clara Estrella' to most of us). Mae Dael (’96) led everyone in singing her composition > the Manresa School Alma Mater Song: Hail Manresa!
Two term President Roberto Gomez-II (’83) then thanked everyone for making this Homecoming a success. He then congratulated the new set of Officers and assured them that he will always be around to provide guidance and to support all programs of the MSAA. Mr. Gomez reminded everyone that the DMAA (launched in 2003) has yet to receive any nominations and directed the attendees to download the nomination forms from the MSAA website. He also mentioned that his 4 year leadership wouldn’t have been as accomplished without the the able assistance and sincere commitment of Mr. Michael Paca (’83). Of course, he ended his short message by thanking Sister Pacita for her spiritual guidance and support of all MSAA Projects.
The night ended with the drawing of the Grand Raffle Prizes – Sister Teody won a days stay for 4 at Rockpoint and Jeanette Montaño (’85) won an Overnight Stay for 2 at Rockpoint.
Kudos to the following sponsors: Social Studies Publications, Inc. (for the souvenir program), Rockpoint (for the Grand Raffle Prizes), Nestle Phils (for the gift packs), Kraft Foods (for the giveaways), Dra. Jean Tenedero-Soniega (for the discounts she gave) and Mead Johnson Philippines (for the tokens).
See you in 2008.
